Katrina - "I No Longer Need Thyroxine Medication"

The Problem

Katrina was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism and prescribed Thyroxine. Despite medication, she was:

  • Exercising intensely but unable to lose weight
  • Struggling with sleep and low energy
  • Felt completely stuck

She’d been told the medication would fix everything. It didn’t.

What I Saw That Others Missed

The Blood Work: Her TSH was “in range” on medication, but her free T3 (active thyroid hormone) was suboptimal. Her inflammation markers were elevated.

The Real Problem: Medication replaces thyroid hormone, but it doesn’t address WHY the thyroid is struggling. Katrina’s inflammation was blocking her thyroid hormone receptors—so even with medication, her cells couldn’t use the hormones effectively.

The Personalised Approach

Nutritional Strategy:

  • An anti-inflammatory food plan based on her blood biochemistry
  • Foods supporting thyroid hormone conversion (T4 to T3)
  • Nutrients for adrenal support
  • Meal timing for cortisol regulation and better sleep

The Critical Adjustment: Reduced her exercise intensity. Her body needed recovery, not more stress. Chronic intense exercise was raising cortisol, which blocks thyroid hormone conversion.

Why This Worked

Root-Cause Healing vs. Symptom Suppression:

Medication suppresses symptoms. Root-cause healing addresses why your thyroid struggled in the first place:

  1. Reduced Inflammation: Her personalised plan eliminated foods that create immune responses. This inflammation was blocking her thyroid hormone receptors.
  2. Supported Conversion: Thyroid medication provides T4 (inactive), but your body must convert it to T3 (active). This requires specific nutrients that her blood work showed she was deficient in.
  3. Addressed Adrenal Stress: Chronic cortisol from over-exercising blocks thyroid hormone conversion. By reducing exercise intensity, her body could finally use her thyroid hormones.
  4. Healed the Gut-Thyroid Connection: 20% of thyroid hormone conversion happens in the gut. We addressed her digestive issues.

The Timeline: Thyroid healing takes months. Katrina stayed on medication initially while we addressed root causes. As her inflammation decreased and her nutrient intake improved, her thyroid produced adequate hormones naturally. Her doctor gradually discontinued medication based on improved blood work.

What I Saw That Her GP Missed

The Clinical Picture: TJ’s blood work was “normal” but not optimal. “Normal” ranges are population averages, not optimal levels.

For post-menopausal women:

  • “Normal” TSH might be too high (thyroid working harder)
  • “Normal” fasting glucose often indicates insulin resistance developing
  • Inflammation markers elevated but still “within range”

These subtle shifts explained why she felt “not right” despite being “healthy.”

The Key: Post-menopause, WHEN you eat becomes as important as WHAT you eat. Insulin sensitivity is lower in the evening.

Why This Worked

TJ is in her mid-50s, post-menopausal, and was doing everything “right”:

The Metabolic Shift Post-Menopause

When oestrogen declines, multiple metabolic changes occur:

  1. Insulin Sensitivity Decreases: Blood sugar becomes harder to control, insulin resistance develops, body stores more visceral belly fat
  2. Fat Storage Patterns Change: Pre-menopause, women store fat in hips/thighs. Post-menopause shifts to visceral fat around organs—the “stubborn” fat that doesn’t respond to standard dieting
  3. Muscle Mass Declines: Lower muscle = slower metabolism
  4. Inflammation Increases: Oestrogen has anti-inflammatory properties. Without it, baseline inflammation rises, affecting thyroid function and fat storage

The Results

Within First Fortnight:

  • Fat percentage dropped 1.7%
  • Released 1.5kg
  • Felt calmer and more balanced

Why Standard Approaches Don't Work Post-Menopause

TJ was following excellent health advice—Mediterranean diet, regular exercise. So why wasn’t it working?

  1. Timing Matters: Post-menopause, when you eat becomes critical. Eating carbohydrates at night drives fat storage more than in younger women.
