How are you coping this year? Stressed, anxious, lacking sleep?

On top of our daily stressors of modern living we are having to deal with the daily stress & media coverage of COVID.

How have you been coping?

Have you been experiencing anxiety?
Are you stressed more than usual?

Are you having trouble sleeping?

Just lately many of my clients have been presenting with symptoms of anxiety, stress & insomnia.
This may have been brought on by the recent situation over the last few months with Covid and lockdowns which are currently continuing for some (thinking of you all in lockdown in Victoria & elsewhere in the world). Working from home for many was stressful with never ending emails, zoom meetings, deadlines & little to no breaks in the day & a constant access to food & wine with many over indulging as a stress coping mechanism. How about the mums who had to homeschool? I feel for those with young children.
Its no wonder this has been an increase in anxiety, stress & insomnia! Modern day living is stressful as it is without the added stress, worry & fear of Covid.

For some anxiety is a daily occurrence.
I’ve experienced it before when my Hashimotos was at its worst.
It’s a horrible feeling of being out of control & not being able to relax, often accompanied by a doom & gloom feeling.
But there is plenty you can do to help alleviate it!
There may be another reason for your anxiety such as a thyroid or sex hormone imbalance or raised cortisol.

A variety of areas need to be addressed Naturopathically.

Firstly make sure you are eating a healthy whole food diet. Ditch the processed foods, sugar & reduce alcohol intake as it just exaserbates anxiety, stress & insomnia.

A good B vitamin (activated) formula will help you cope better, supporting the nervous system, hormones & energy production.
You also need to address any gut imbalances (often with a good probiotic) as 70% of your neurotransmitters (feel good hormones) are made in your gut!

Then there is magnesium!
This super powered mineral is known as ‘nature’s chill pill’. It’s so important to get a highly absorbable form which can effectively help many systems in the body such as our hormones, energy levels, but here it’s also very important for the nervous system. If you have already seen me for anxiety issues you will know I recommend the mienral celloid PPMP for anxiety attacks. I know many of you have said please don’t run out of these wonderful tablets. Practitioner only supplements are backed by studies for effectiveness & safety. Don’t waste your money on lesser products. I have my favorite effective ones that I stock & use all the time as I know they work!

Along with the above general natural medicine suggestions a personalised herbal tonic can help to alleviate symptoms greatly as adaptogenic herbs which work with our bodies to support our adrenal glands help restore balance & get us feeling more in control and calm again.
A Personalised herbal tonic can have a tremendous benefit on the nervous system to balance and calm down feelings of anxiety/stress & insomnia. Passionflower, oats, lavender, chamomile, Zizyphus, Magnolia, Licorice, Rehmannia & beautiful Withania (Ashwaganda) are favorites I may use. At the same time I can address other issues which is why I love herbs. It’s a solution to many health issues in the one bottle.

Go do some exercise each day even if its just a walk. I love my almost daily walk on the beach. Walking barefoot on the beach or grass grounds us to the earth. “Research on grounding or earthing does show solid evidence of increasing your overall health through better sleep or lower inflammation or even better blood flow’. What’s your favourite place to go for a walk? Did you know that forests help to raise our killer T cells? Its known as forest bathing in Japan. Maybe you could go for a forest walk (Kuitpo Forest is a local one in Adelaide). Get the whole family to come along, including your dog.

Meditation (listening daily to a guided visualtion while doing nice slow deep breaths into & out of your belly helps) Hypnosis also works well which I am able to do with you (personalised to help allieviate your problem).

A nice warm to hot bath with candles & some relaxing music is a nic way to relax and unwind at the end of the day.

A drop of lavender essential oil on each temple & tip of your nose can help you to destress & fall asleep. Sometimes you may need to reapply again. It’s a good standby for me.

Avoid using electronics for at least an hour before bed. It can easilt disrupt sleep. Turn off electronics or put mobile phone in airplane mode.
